Motorola Shows Off WiMax in Chicago
Motorola is going after the emerging WiMax market in a big way. This week the company has been showing off its new hardware and software at WiMax World USA in Chicago — one of six U.S. metropolitan areas in which Motorola will build the network infrastructure for Sprint Nextel’s high-speed “Xohm” network. The full range of Motorola’s WiMax capabilities were put on display during cruises along the Chicago River sponsored by Motorola. “We set up a system covering a mile-and-a-half stretch of the river running through the heart of downtown Chicago — about the worst imaginable place to put in a system — in order to show WiMax in action,” said Motorola’s WiMax business development manager Tom Mitoraj. “And we proved that WiMax could do what we had promised.” Cruising the River People on the cruise were able to access the network as the boat sailed past access points located along the river bank. “We had a half dozen devices surfing the Web and displaying full-motion video of live CNN feeds,” Mitoraj explained. “And we had WiMax phones from our mobile devices group that we were sharing with everybody so they could make phone calls.” Individuals riding Chicago’s famed elevated train or driving in vehicles were able to access the network using compatible hardware. At one point Mitoraj got in a car with one doubting Thomas and drove as quickly as he could on the road by the shoreline, about 50 miles per hour. “We showed that the handoff really worked,” Mitoraj said. All this is good news for Sprint Nextel, which will launch its precommercial service for Chicago by the end of the year. “Motorola has made tremendous progress in the deployment of our Xohm WiMax network in Chicago,” said Barry West, the CTO and president of the carrier’s Xohm…
