Linden Lab Bans Gambling in Second Life
Linden Lab, the creator and operator of the enormously popular virtual world “Second Life,” announced that the company will no longer allow gambling in its online service. The announcement marks a significant change for Linden Lab, which has generally taken a hands-off policy toward its customers’ virtual activities. In a posting to the official Linden Lab blog in April, Robin Harper (aka Robin Linden), the Linden Lab vice president for marketing and community development, said, “It has been a basic tenet of Second Life that all residents are legally responsible for their own activities and for complying with the laws of the local jurisdiction in which they reside.” However, the FBI has been looking at the presence of gambling activity in Second Life and has been analyzing whether, by hosting such activity, the California-based company has been violating federal law. New Gambling Policy In an effort to head off potential legal problems, Linden Lab decided to ban online wagering. Alex Yenni, a spokesperson for Linden Lab, declined comment: “Unfortunately at this point we’re directing all inquiry regarding the new gambling prohibition to the Second Life blog,” he said. “There you can find details regarding the announcement, and a FAQ section.” The relevant information is contained in a post that Harper wrote for the official blog, in which she said that while the company does not offer gambling in its virtual world, all residents must nonetheless comply with state and federal laws. “And,” she added, “because there are a variety of conflicting gambling regulations around the world, we have chosen to restrict gambling in Second Life as described in a revised policy which is posted in the Knowledge Base under ‘Policy Regarding Wagering in Second Life.’” Under the new policy, it is a violation to wager in games in the Second Life environment if such games “rely…
