Apple Finally Restores MobileMe E-Mail
Apple managed to finish restoring full service Tuesday evening for its MobileMe subscribers that have been without e-mail access since July 18. The users gained limited Web-based e-mail access on July 26, but now can send and receive messages from e-mail client applications as well. According to Apple’s MobileMe status Web page, the company has “completed restoring Mail service, including historical messages, to all of the 1 percent of affected members.” Subscribers that are still experiencing MobileMe-related e-mail issues can take advantage of Apple’s new dedicated chat system for help. Apple also revealed that it fixed a MobileMe syncing bug that was preventing calendar and contact data from properly syncing wirelessly with the iPhone and iPod touch. Affected users typically found that they were missing some or all of their Address Book and iCal data on their handheld, but the information remained available on their computers and on the MobileMe Web site. The MobileMe service has suffered from performance and stability setbacks ever since its early July launch, but Apple is now hoping the worst is in the past. David G., Apple’s MobileMe status blogger, stated, “By completing this restoration of Mail services, we hope we have put the vast majority of MobileMe Mail problems behind us and can now focus on improving other aspects of this new ambitious service.”

Scrabble on Facebook Crashes, and EA Blames Hackers
Facebook’s online Scrabble application came up blank Wednesday as an apparent hacker attack pulled down the application. Game maker Electronic Arts, partnering with Hasbro, the publisher of Scrabble, released a statement that read in part, “”We’re working with our partners to resolve this issue and have Scrabble back online and ready to play as soon as possible.” The shutdown of the game came directly after Facebook took Scrabble knockoff Scrabulous offline amid threats of a lawsuit from Hasbro. Scrabulous is a product of an independent software company based in India. The Indian company continues to offer its Scrabble clone outside the U.S. and Canada. ‘Tech Problems’ When attempting to load the Scrabble beta application in Facebook, users received the following screen message: “We’ll be back up shortly … “We’re working on some tech problems and Scrabble will be ready to play as soon as possible! We appreciate all the great feedback we’ve received over the past week and as a result we’re making changes to Scrabble for its official launch in mid-August, including a streamlined app with the option to turn off animations for faster game play and full keyboard functionality for those who prefer this way to play.” Observers are speculating about whether disgruntled Scrabulous users hacked the system or bugs in the software caused the outage — or a combination of both. While EA claims outside hackers were at fault, some observers believe that may be a cover to save face. Scrabble beta was still out of commission as of Wednesday afternoon. Evidently former Scrabulous users were angry about the loss of their game. It’s estimated the Scrabulous application had nearly half a million U.S. users before Facebook pulled the plug and substituted the licensed Scrabble beta. Rebelling Against Scrabble A Scrabble Boycott group has been formed on Facebook and members are calling for a complete…

Italian Broadcaster Sues YouTube for $856 Million
YouTube, the popular video-sharing Web site, and its owner, Google, are being sued for allegedly distributing nearly 5,000 copies of programming owned by a Milan, Italy-based company. After conducting a survey of videos on YouTube, Mediaset said it found 4,643 copies of its programming, equaling 325 hours of video, on the Web site. Mediaset, which owns three Italian television networks and is controlled by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, is claiming that the videos break copyright laws. The media company also said that, based on the number of video clips and hits generated, it lost 315,700 broadcasting days. Mediaset did not say how much ad revenue was lost, but said it is seeking 550 million Euros (US$856.27 million) in damages. YouTube responded to the allegations by saying that the Web site takes copyright allegations very seriously, and adding that there is no reason for legal action. In the past, YouTube has said it not only prohibits users from uploading infringing material, but works with copyright holders to find and remove infringing content. Not the First Time This is not the first time YouTube and Google have been sued for copyright infringement. In March 2007, Viacom Inc. filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Google. The media giant, which owns Paramount Pictures, Dreamworks, MTV and other businesses, claimed that 160,000 unauthorized Viacom video clips were viewed 1.5 billion times on YouTube. Viacom sought an injunction blocking Google and YouTube from any additional infringement. The case is not expected to be heard in court until next year. Gestevision Telecino, a division of Mediaset, also sued YouTube for copyright infringement. Gestevision took the case to Spain’s national commercial court in February despite YouTube’s attempts to have the case heard in the U.S. In that case, YouTube said its users, not YouTube, are responsible for copyright breaches. Besides Viacom, Gestevision and…
