Is Google Apps Ready for the Enterprise?
According to a new Burton Group report, Google’s hosted applications are not ready for the big leagues, but at least one analyst is countering that the report is overly pessimistic. The report by Burton Group looks at Google Apps Premier Edition (GAPE), which offers office productivity software as a service. Released in February, GAPE includes e-mail, instant messaging, document creation, document sharing, and calendaring for $50 per user per year. The Burton Group report warned that “adopting GAPE without understanding its quirks or looking at other alternatives” could be a “career-limiting move” for the recommender. The wise recommender, it said, will understand the pluses and minuses of the delivery model, the product, and the company. SasS, Apps, Google The delivery model is software as a service (SaaS). The Burton Group report noted that the model assumes all users have an always-on Internet connection, and cautioned that support from a provider such as Google will be via a Web site rather than the face-to-face support some I.T. departments might expect. Additionally, some companies, such as financial institutions, shy away from storing corporate information outside a firewall. The wise corporate evaluator, said the report, must consider the capabilities of the product itself and the gaps in its functionalities. As examples, it cited the “lack of user roles, no departmental categories, and minimal records-management capabilities,” noting that these shortcomings might be expected from a consumer-focused company. While the report noted that the product will likely improve over time, it said that Google Apps is not as full-featured as other products available today.
