Film fans can now buy new movies on Apple’s iTunes Store on the same day as their DVD release. That synchronicity was announced Thursday by the Cupertino, Calif.-based company, which said cooperating studios include 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment, and First Look Studios. The price will be $14.99 for new releases, and they can be viewed on an iPod with video, a Mac or PC, or a TV using Apple TV. Some of the new titles include American Gangster, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Juno, Cloverfield, I Am Legend, There Will Be Blood, and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Disney Sells 4 Million Movie distribution through iTunes is becoming an increasingly important channel for the studios. In March, for instance, Disney CEO Bob Iger told news media that his company had sold four million movies through iTunes since it started offering movies though the online service in 2006. Earlier this year, Apple announced that movie rentals were available on iTunes one month after their DVD release. The January announcement set rental prices of $3 to $4 for a 30-day rental period for movies from the major studios. Bobby Tulsiani, an analyst with industry research firm JupiterResearch, said he expects other online movie services, such as Amazon Unbox or Movielink, will offer a similar deal in the not-too-distant future. He noted that, although the iTunes story has received the most attention, several of the major studios were also making their movies available through cable video-on-demand (VOD) services on the same day as the DVD release. DVD Sales Increased On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that Warner Bros. would release its movies to some VOD systems at the same time it releases them to DVD. A DVD release is generally about four to…

Rare Colossal Squid Has the Biggest Eyes in the World
Marine scientists studying the carcass of a rare colossal squid said Wednesday they had measured its eye at 27 centimeters (10.8 inches) across — bigger than a dinner plate — making it the largest animal eye on Earth. One of the squid’s two eyes, with a lens as big as an orange, was found intact as the scientists examined the creature while it was slowly defrosted at New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa. It has been preserved there since being caught in the Ross Sea off Antarctica’s northern coast last year. “This is the only intact eye (of a colossal squid) that’s ever been found. It’s spectacular,” said Auckland University of Technology squid specialist Kat Bolstad, one of a team of international scientists brought in to examine the creature. “It’s the largest known eye in the animal kingdom,” Bolstad told The Associated Press. The squid is the biggest specimen ever caught of the rare and mysterious deep-water species Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, or colossal squid. When caught, it measured 8 meters (26 feet) long and weighed almost 500 kilograms (1,089 pounds), but scientists believe the species may grow up to 14 meters (46 feet) long. “I think they will be entirely visual predators with eyes like that, and the lens was truly phenomenal,” said another scientists, Steve O’Shea. “This is the largest eye ever recorded in history and studied,” said Swedish Professor Eric Warrant of the University of Lund, who specializes in vision in invertebrates. “It has a huge lens the size of an orange and captures an awful lot of light in the dark depths in which it hunts.” They can descend to 2 kilometers (6,500 feet) and are known to be aggressive hunters. While scientists have yet to confirm the squid’s gender, Bolstad said it was “probably a female, females grow larger than the male, we believe.” It…
Acute Bacterial Meningitis at the ‘Complexe Pediatrique’ of Bangui, Central African Republic
To precis the aetiologies of children meningitis and the susceptibility to antibiotics of bacteria responsible for meningitis in Bangui, we conducted a prospective study between October 2004 and September 2005, at the ‘Complexe P diatrique de Bangui’, Central African Republic (CAR). Children from 1 day to 16 years with suspected meningitis and who underwent a lumbar puncture were enrolled. Gram staining, culture on chocolate blood medium, cell count, biochemistry (protein level, glucose ratio), capsular antigen detection were performed for each cerebrospinal fluid. MICs were determined by the E-test method. Four hundred and seventeen patients were enrolled during the study period; 130 were proven acute bacterial meningitis and 37 probable bacterial meningitis. Among proven bacterial meningitis, Streptococcus pneumoniae was the most common organism responsible for meningitis (62 cases, 48%) followed by Haemophilus influenzae (46 cases, 35%) and by Neisseria meningitidis and Salmonella sp. (8 cases, 6% each). Ninety-four percent and 96% of S. pneumoniae strains tested remain susceptible to benzylpenicilline and chloramphenicol, respectively. A beta-lactamase was detected in 92% of H. influenzae strains tested. However, MICs 50% and 90% for amoxicillin were found to be 1 and 4 mg/l, respectively and 33% of these strains were resistant to chloramphenicol. The global mortality rate was 35% (59/167). This mortality rate was 47% for S. pneumoniae, 33% for H. influenzae, 62% for Salmonella sp. and 13% for N. meningitidis. The probabilistic treatment with ampicillin and chloramphenicol usually administered for children meningitis in Bangui must be reconsidered particularly in cases of H. influenzae meningitis. It is of importance to reduce the presentation delays of children with suspected meningitis in Bangui. The H. influenzae b immunization would allow a dramatic reduction of meningitis cases and deaths in Central African children.
Epidemiological Survey of Kawasaki Disease in Sichuan Province of China
Objectives: To investigate the incidence and epidemiological characteristics of Kawasaki Disease (KD) in Sichuan province of China. Methods: The questionnaire and diagnostic guideline for KD provided by Japan Kawasaki Disease Research Center (JKDRC) were used for the questionnaire investigation in pediatric departments of all hospitals in Sichuan province for data of KD diagnosed in their hospitals from 1 January 1997 to 31 December 2001. Results: Of the 212 hospitals investigated, 91.5% responded to the questionnaire investigation, with a total of 1811 cases of KD identified. The incidence per 100 000 children
