Trojan Horse Threat Stalks Pentagon After Bogus Hardware Purchase
Counterfeit products are a routine threat for the electronics industry. However, the more sinister specter of an electronic Trojan horse, lurking in the circuitry of a computer or a network router and allowing attackers clandestine access or control, was raised again recently by the FBI and the U.S. Defense Department. The new law enforcement and national security concerns were prompted by Operation Cisco Raider, which has led to 15 criminal cases involving counterfeit products bought in part by military agencies, military contractors and electric power companies in the United States. Over the two-year operation, 36 search warrants have been executed, resulting in the discovery of 3,500 counterfeit Cisco Systems network components with an estimated retail value of more than $3.5 million, the FBI said. The FBI is still not certain whether the ring’s actions were for profit or part of a state-sponsored intelligence effort. The potential threat, according to the FBI agents who gave a briefing at the Office of Management and Budget on Jan. 11, includes the remote jamming of supposedly secure computer networks and gaining access to supposedly highly secure systems. Contents of the briefing were contained in a PowerPoint presentation leaked to a Web site, Above Top Secret. A spokesman for Cisco said it had investigated the counterfeit gear seized by law enforcement agencies and had not found any secret back door. “We did not find any evidence of re-engineering in the manner that was described in the FBI presentation,” said the spokesman, John Noh. He also said the company believed that the counterfeiters were interested in copying high-volume products to make a quick profit. “We know what these counterfeiters are about,” Noh said. Grappling with major layoffs and a stock price that’s been chopped nearly in half since last year, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. kept new details about its turnaround plans close to the vest Thursday in a very brief annual meeting with shareholders. The Sunnyvale-based company’s chief executive, Hector Ruiz, notably did not discuss AMD’s long-awaited plans to cut its heavy manufacturing costs. His 20-minute speech was punctuated with just one question from a shareholder — about why AMD doesn’t sponsor professional golf tournaments to increase its visibility. A spokesman said the company typically has short annual meetings. AMD is the world’s No. 2 maker of microprocessors, the brains of personal computers, and it and much larger rival Intel Corp. spend billions of dollars each year refining their manufacturing processes, which make up a large part of both companies’ expenses and intellectual property. A year ago Ruiz began hinting that AMD is thinking about offloading some of its manufacturing duties to third parties to save money, but he has been tight-lipped about details since then. “Our plans are bold, and progress is ongoing,” Ruiz said Thursday in prepared remarks about the so-called “asset smart” manufacturing strategy. “And I hope to communicate additional details of this complex undertaking in the very near future.” AMD has racked up more than $4 billion in losses over the last year and a half as intensifying competition from Intel and expenses from AMD’s $5.6 billion acquisition of graphics chip maker ATI Technologies have taken their toll. U.S. Airlifts Aid to Myanmar, U.N. Urges Junta To Cooperate
The United States delivered its first relief supplies to Myanmar on Monday, as the U.N. urged the reclusive nation to open its doors to foreign experts who can help up to 2 million cyclone victims facing disease and starvation. Myanmar reported that the official death toll from Cyclone Nargis had risen by nearly 3,500 to 31,938. Nearly 30,000 others remain missing, and the U.N. and others have said the death toll could reach 100,000 or higher. Britain’s opposition leader called for air-dropping aid if Myanmar’s military government remains adamant. The U.S. military C-130 cargo plane, packed with 14 tons of supplies, flew out of the Thai air force base of Utapao and landed in Yangon, capping prolonged negotiations to persuade Myanmar’s military government to accept U.S. help. Several Myanmar Cabinet ministers, military officers and the top U.S. diplomat in Myanmar, Shari Villarosa, greeted the plane. Government spokesman Ye Htut said the aid, which was transferred to Myanmar army trucks, would be ferried by air force helicopters to the worst-hit Irrawaddy delta later Monday. Two more U.S. air shipments were scheduled to land Tuesday. At the White House, presidential press secretary Dana Perino said the C-130 flights hopefully were “just the beginning of what will be much needed assistance that we were happy to provide. So we hope it gets to the people as quickly as possible.” She also said the United States was prepared to provide an additional $13 million in food and logistical assistance to the United Nations’ world food program for distribution to cyclone victims, bringing overall U.S. aid to $16.25 million. Seaweed Gives Clues About Early Humans in Americas
Remains of meals that included seaweed are helping confirm the date of a settlement in southern Chile that may offer the earliest evidence of humans in the Americas. Researchers date the seaweed found at Monte Verde to more than 14,000 years ago, 1,000 years earlier than the well-studied Clovis culture. And the report comes just a month after other scientists announced they had found coprolites — fossilized human feces — dating to about 14,000 years ago in a cave in Oregon. Taken together, the finds move back evidence of people in the Americas by a millennium or more, with settlements in northern and southern coastal areas. The prevailing theory has been that people followed herds of migrating animals across an ancient land bridge between Siberia and Alaska, and then moved southward along the West coast. Proof has been hard to come by, however. The sea was about 200 feet lower at the time and as it rose it would have inundated the remains of coastal settlements. A team led by anthropologist Tom Dillehay of Vanderbilt University reports on the new seaweed study from Monte Verde, Chile, in Friday’s edition of the journal Science. There is a continuous mountain chain along the western side of the Americas, Dillehay explained in a briefing, with thousands of rivers and streams flowing down the mountains to the ocean. This would have encouraged north-to-south migration, he explained, with some groups choosing to turn and follow rivers inland. Places like the Paisley Caves in Oregon and Monte Verde in Chile are ideal locations for such settlement, he said. “We really don’t know,” he added, but genetic and linguistic evidence is beginning to build a fairly strong case that movement was primarily along the coast, he said. “I tend to think that, even if they came down the coastline, it is a slow process,” Dillehay said….
