Background: The expression of pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) was identified by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in culprit atherothrombotic plaque specimens harvested from patients admitted with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Methods: The atherothrombotic samples were collected from a consecutive cohort consisting of 20 individuals admitted with STEMI to Stavanger University Hospital, Norway, from 2005-2006, presenting angiographically with an acute thrombotic occlusion of a coronary artery characterized by TIMI flow 0. The atherothrombotic plaques were obtained by aspiration thrombectomy during percutaneous coronary intervention within 12 hours from the onset of symptoms and prepared for IHC analysis. Results: In the IHC analysis staining for PAPP-A occurred in the extracellular matrix of the plaques and no evidence of staining for PAPP-A was found in the thrombi. Conclusion: Our results indicate that in vivo PAPP-A is strongly expressed in atherothrombotic plaques harvested from patients admitted with STEMI, as documented by IHC.Trial registration: biobankregisteret@fhi.no1846

They were compared with 22 people who ate a diet low in fat and high in carbohydrates, with high levels of low-fat dairy and whole grains.All participants were fed only enough good to meet 60 percent of their estimated daily calorie needs, and lost an average of 8.8 pounds. Participants in the “Eco-Atkins” group had lower levels of LDL and blood pressure than those in the control group, however.In an accompanying commentary, Katherine Tuttle and Joan Milton of Washington School of Medicine said that the research might provide a safer way to consume a low-carbohydrate diet, but stopped short of recommending it without larger, long-term studies on the potential risks.High-protein, low-carbohydrate diets can lead to excessive water loss and kidney damage.Dr. Dean Ornish said that the diet used in the study was quite similar to the diet he advocates, although slightly higher in vegetable fat. Chevron hires twelve public relations firms to discredit indigenous Indians in Ecuador
(NaturalNews) In response to an environmental lawsuit filed against the oil giant, Chevron has fortified its defenses with at least twelve different public relations firms whose purpose is to debunk the claims made against the company by indigenous people living in the Amazon forests of Ecuador. According to them, Chevron dumped billions of gallons of toxic waste in the Amazon between 1964 and 1990, causing damages assessed at more than $27 billion.The company is being criticized by people and organizations from across the social and political spectrum for its unethical behavior in regards to the case. Originally filed in U.S. federal district court back in 1993, the lawsuit was eventually moved to courts in Ecuador at Chevron’s behest. Having initially lauded Ecuador’s legal system in an effort to have the case moved there, Chevron later changed its mind and began attacking the system when that system found the company liable for damages.Shareholders are also upset with Chevron for its gross mismanagement of the case in which it has sidestepped the rule of law and employed guerilla-style tactics in a last ditch effort to fend off an unfavorable ruling. Part of this includes hiring Hill and Knowlton, the same firm that represented the tobacco industry during its indictment over tobacco causing cancer, to perform the same task concerning toxic oil contaminants.Evidence presented at Chevron’s trial included over 50,000 chemical samples taken by the company itself which proved that all of its former oil drilling sites are contaminated with toxic byproducts that cause cancer. Many of these wells have contaminated rivers, streams, and other water sources which natives use for drinking water. Despite all the undeniable evidence, Chevron is working hard to cover up the facts and dismiss its responsibility in the matter.Speaking of responsibility, Chevron’s other hired firms are trying to claim that the company worked out a deal with the government in Ecuador back in the mid-1990s that released it from cleanup responsibility. However the terms expressed in the current case regarding cleanup are exempt from the former agreement which, in and of itself, was determined to be fraudulent. Two former Chevron lawyers and a handful of former government officials were indicted because of that agreement which makes it ludicrous to try to use the incident as a defense in the current case.A final ruling on the case is set to be made sometime this year. It also supports the idea that too-low levels of magnesium could result in increased deterioration of memory in aging humans.”Magnesium is essential for the proper functioning of many tissues in the body, including the brain and, in an earlier study, we demonstrated that magnesium promoted synaptic plasticity in cultured brain cells,” Dr. Liu explained in the press statement. “Therefore it was tempting to take our studies a step further and investigate whether an increase in brain magnesium levels enhanced cognitive function in animals.”Using a new magnesium compound dubbed magnesium-L-threonate (MgT) that can significantly increase magnesium in the brain when used as a dietary supplement, the research team gave magnesium to lab rats of different ages along with their regular diet. Then the scientists checked the animals for behavioral and cellular changes associated with memory. “We found that increased brain magnesium enhanced many different forms of learning and memory in both young and aged rats,” stated Dr. Liu. In fact, the research revealed an increase in the number of functional synapses and enhancement of a host of processes in the brain that are necessary for learning and memory. “Our findings suggest that elevating brain magnesium content via increasing magnesium intake might be a useful new strategy to enhance cognitive abilities,” Dr. Liu concluded in the media statement. “Moreover, half the population of industrialized countries has a magnesium deficit, which increases with aging. Vitamin A and Vitamin B-12 Concentrations in Relation to Mortality and Morbidity among Children Born to HIV-Infected Women
Vitamin A supplementation starting at 6 months of age is an important child survival intervention; however, not much is known about the association between vitamin A status before 6 months and mortality among children born to HIV-infected women. Plasma concentrations of vitamins A and B-12 were available at 6 weeks of age (n = 576 and 529, respectively) for children born to HIV-infected women and they were followed up for morbidity and survival status until 24 months after birth. Children in the highest quartile of vitamin A had a 49% lower risk of death by 24 months of age compared to the lowest quartile (HR: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.29–0.90; P-value for trend = 0.01). Higher vitamin A levels were protective in the sub-groups of HIV-infected and un-infected children but this was statistically significant only in the HIV-uninfected subgroup. Higher vitamin A concentrations in plasma are protective against mortality in children born to HIV-infected women.

The impact of platelet function or C-reactive protein, on cardiovascular events after an acute myocardial infarction
Background: Recurrent cardiovascular events following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are common. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of platelet aggregation, PFA-100 closure times and peak C-reactive protein (CRP), respectively, on the occurrence of death, myocardial infarction and ischemic cerebral events after an AMI. Furthermore, to examine the relationship between the platelet function tests and peak CRP. Methods: Three hundred and thirty-four patients with AMI were included in the study. Platelet aggregation was analyzed by an aggregometer using laser light (PA-200). The state of high residual platelet reactivity was defined as normal closure times (PFA-100) during treatment with aspirin. Results: The fourth quartile of peak CRP was associated with poorer outcome as compared to the first quartile in a multivariate Cox-regression analysis, with a hazard ratio of 2.0 (95% CI 1.1 3.7) for the occurrence of death, myocardial infarction and ischemic cerebral events. The fourth quartile of peak CRP (>64.6 mg/l) was associated with platelet aggregation (p < 0.001, adjusted R2 = 0.13) and high residual platelet reactivity, in a multivariate model, with an odds ratio of 2.9 (CI 95% 1.3 6.8), as compared to the first quartile. Neither the highest quartile of platelet aggregation nor the state of high residual platelet reactivity predicted new cardiovascular events. Conclusion: In patients with myocardial infarction, measured peak CRP is associated with new cardiovascular events. Despite an association with peak CRP neither more pronounced platelet aggregation nor PFA-100 closure times independently predict new cardiovascular events.

Aminaphtone in the control of Schamberg’s Disease
The aim of this case report is to describe control of Schamberg’s disease using aminaphtone. We report on the case of a 28-year-old patient who presented with multiple purpuric lesions of the lower extremities which had appeared spontaneously. A biopsy of the skin was performed that showed a perivascular T-cell lymphocytic infiltrate centered on the small superficial blood vessels of the skin and so a diagnosis of Schamberg’s disease was reached. The patient was prescribed corticoids and the lesions disappeared however on suspension of the medication the lesions re-emerged within three to seven days. This treatment was unsuccessfully continued for more than one year. Thus another therapeutic option was attempted: 75 mg of aminaphtone was prescribed twice daily for one month and the purpuric lesions disappeared within about one week. One year after suspending the medication no relapse of the purpura was observed.
