If you use LinkedIn and Facebook as a main tool for managing your business contacts, you’re going to love the news Microsoft came out with [recently]. But if social networks distract you at work and hurt your productivity, then let’s hope your tech staff doesn’t install updates to Outlook on your computer. Microsoft is beta testing a new feature it calls the Outlook Social Connector. It’ll eventually sync information from LinkedIn, Facebook and MySpace into Outlook. Right now, it only works with LinkedIn. It also keeps you up to speed on what your contacts are doing on those networks. For example, let’s say you have to e-mail Judy. When you type Judy’s e-mail address in the To field, a window below the e-mail shows everything Judy has been up to on the networks. If Judy changes her contact information on LinkedIn, your contact info for her in Outlook will automatically update — helping to make sure you always have the most recent information. And imagine how much time is saved by adding LinkedIn contacts to your Outlook, letting you expand your network while never leaving your e-mail program. But imagine how much time will be wasted. High Prevalence of Soil-transmitted Helminths in Western Kenya: Failure to Implement Deworming Guidelines in Rural Nyanza Province
Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections affect an estimated 2 billion people world wide. Children experience the greatest morbidity, limiting their potential in academic and physical endeavors. Our study assessed the prevalence of STH infections in primary school-aged children in a rural village in the Nyanza Province of Kenya. Over two-thirds (68%) of the sampled population tested positive using a direct smear microscopic analysis of single stool samples. Only heavy worm infections would be detected with this technique; thus 68% is a minimum estimate of prevalence. Prior to our study, there were no deworming programs in this village, despite WHO and Kenyan government guidelines supporting regular deworming programs. Our study demonstrates the significant burden of STH infections in a rural Kenyan village and highlights the need for deworming programs in similar venues. We also demonstrate that with basic infrastructure and community involvement, regular deworming can be implemented effectively in remote, rural communities.

Light Patch Tuesday Won’t Include VBScript Vulnerability
After a record-matching February that flooded corporate security departments with 13 bulletins to address 26 flaws, Microsoft’s March Patch Tuesday cycle will be more manageable for IT administrators. On March 9, Microsoft will ship two security updates to fix eight vulnerabilities in Windows and Office. In its monthly advance notification, Microsoft gave a sneak peak into the bulletins. Both are marked important, Microsoft’s second-highest severity rating. But despite not earning critical status, the flaws are hardly benign. The eight vulnerabilities Microsoft outlined could open the door to attackers to insert malicious code onto unpatched computers. Pesky Office Bugs The first bulletin will fix vulnerabilities in Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. This bulletin also affects the most recent service packs for XP and Vista, SP2 and SP3. Microsoft said both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of these operating systems have the important bugs. The second bulletin will tackle bugs in Excel 2002, Excel 2003, and Excel 2007 on Windows, as well as Excel 2004 and Excel 2008 for the Mac and some Excel issues in Office service packs. From what Paul Henry, a security and forensic analyst at Lumension, has seen, it doesn’t appear that the bulletins released will address all the issues in the wild. “Interestingly, Microsoft also announced some end-of-life dates of Windows XP, so customers will soon have to start updating these operating systems, which include Windows XP Service Pack 2, as they will no longer be supported after July 13, 2010,” Henry said. “Customers are being encouraged to upgrade to Service Pack 3 or to Windows 7 as soon as possible.” The VBScript Vulnerability On Monday, customers were alerted to a VBScript vulnerability that was exposed on supported versions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 through the use of Internet Explorer. With its search-engine deal with Yahoo approved by regulators, Microsoft is gearing up for another run at challenging Google’s commanding market lead. But with comScore reporting Yahoo and Microsoft had 17 percent and 11.3 percent shares of the U.S. search market in January, the partnership will need to do some heavy lifting to dent Google’s 65.4 percent share. Still, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said he thinks the deal with Yahoo will greatly improve the relevance of advertising placed next to search results, which benefits advertisers and users alike. “The relevance of advertising depends heavily on the density of bids,” Ballmer told the Search Marketing Expo West this week. “And the ability to put together Yahoo’s volumes and Microsoft’s volumes and use that in a way that improves the experience more — let’s call it all involved parties — we think is absolutely fantastic.” A Lot of Work To Do For advertisers, Ballmer noted, the Microsoft-Yahoo deal means more eyeballs in one campaign. “On top of that, we think there’s a huge advantage to scale, just in terms of our ability to get more signals [and] do more tests,” he added. What’s more, Ballmer thinks the greater scale and volume from the deal will help Microsoft improve the relevance of results for search-engine users. YouTube Rolls Out Auto-Captioning for Hearing Impaired
To improve accessibility for the hearing impaired, YouTube on Thursday rolled out auto-captioning for all users. The video site initiated the project in 2008 and opened it up to a small group of users last November. Auto-captioning combines some of the speech-to-text algorithms found in Google’s Voice Search to automatically generate video captions. The video owner can also download the auto-generated captions, improve them, and upload the new version. Viewers will soon be able to choose an option to translate those captions into any one of 50 different languages, explained YouTube Product Manager Hiroto Tokusei. “Tens of millions of people in the U.S. experience some kind of hearing impairment and recent studies have predicted that over 700 million people worldwide will suffer from hearing impairment by 2015,” Tokusei said. “To address a clear need, the broadcast industry began running captions on regular video programming in the early 1970s. Today, closed captions on video are more prevalent than ever. But generating captions today can be a time-consuming and complicated process.” Technology Multitasking YouTube is working to remove the barriers with auto-captions. If the video owner doesn’t initially choose to auto-generate the captions, YouTube is making it possible for viewers to request caption processing with a button next to uncaptioned videos. Any video owner can click the button if they want to speed up the availability of auto-captions. “This is of course a great thing for the deaf and hearing impaired. The impact of platelet function or C-reactive protein, on cardiovascular events after an acute myocardial infarction
Background: Recurrent cardiovascular events following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are common. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of platelet aggregation, PFA-100 closure times and peak C-reactive protein (CRP), respectively, on the occurrence of death, myocardial infarction and ischemic cerebral events after an AMI. Furthermore, to examine the relationship between the platelet function tests and peak CRP. Methods: Three hundred and thirty-four patients with AMI were included in the study. Platelet aggregation was analyzed by an aggregometer using laser light (PA-200). The state of high residual platelet reactivity was defined as normal closure times (PFA-100) during treatment with aspirin. Results: The fourth quartile of peak CRP was associated with poorer outcome as compared to the first quartile in a multivariate Cox-regression analysis, with a hazard ratio of 2.0 (95% CI 1.1 3.7) for the occurrence of death, myocardial infarction and ischemic cerebral events. The fourth quartile of peak CRP (>64.6 mg/l) was associated with platelet aggregation (p < 0.001, adjusted R2 = 0.13) and high residual platelet reactivity, in a multivariate model, with an odds ratio of 2.9 (CI 95% 1.3 6.8), as compared to the first quartile. Neither the highest quartile of platelet aggregation nor the state of high residual platelet reactivity predicted new cardiovascular events. Conclusion: In patients with myocardial infarction, measured peak CRP is associated with new cardiovascular events. Despite an association with peak CRP neither more pronounced platelet aggregation nor PFA-100 closure times independently predict new cardiovascular events.

Background: The expression of pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) was identified by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in culprit atherothrombotic plaque specimens harvested from patients admitted with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Methods: The atherothrombotic samples were collected from a consecutive cohort consisting of 20 individuals admitted with STEMI to Stavanger University Hospital, Norway, from 2005-2006, presenting angiographically with an acute thrombotic occlusion of a coronary artery characterized by TIMI flow 0. The atherothrombotic plaques were obtained by aspiration thrombectomy during percutaneous coronary intervention within 12 hours from the onset of symptoms and prepared for IHC analysis. Results: In the IHC analysis staining for PAPP-A occurred in the extracellular matrix of the plaques and no evidence of staining for PAPP-A was found in the thrombi. Conclusion: Our results indicate that in vivo PAPP-A is strongly expressed in atherothrombotic plaques harvested from patients admitted with STEMI, as documented by IHC.Trial registration: biobankregisteret@fhi.no1846

Plasma TF activity predicts cardiovascular mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction
Objectives and BackgroundTissue factor (TF) contributes to thrombosis following plaque disruption in acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Aim of the study was to investigate the impact of plasma TF activity on prognosis in patients with ACS.Methods and ResultsOne-hundred seventy-four patients with unstable Angina pectoris (uAP) and 112 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were included with a mean follow up time of 3.26 years. On admission, plasma TF activity was assessed. Patients were categorized into 2 groups: a high-TF activity group with TF >24 pmol/L and low TF activity group with TF 24 pmol/L. Fifteen cardiovascular deaths occurred in the uAP group and 16 in the AMI group. In AMI TF activity was 24,9 2,78 pmol/l (mean SEM) in survivors and 40,9 7,96 pmol/l in nonsurvivors (P = 0.024). In uAP no differences were observed (25.0 8.04 pmol/L nonsurvivors vs. 25.7 2.14 pmol/L survivors; P = 0.586). Kaplan-Meier estimates of survival at 3.26 years regarding TF activity in AMI were 81.3% and 92.2% with an hazard ratio of 3.02 (95% CI [1.05 8.79], P = 0.03). The Cox proportional hazards model adjusting for correlates of age and risk factors showed that plasma TF activity was an independent correlate of survival (hazard ratio 9.27, 95% CI [1.24 69.12], P = 0.03). In an additional group of patients with uAP and AMI, we identified circulating microparticles as the prevailing reservoir of plasma TF activity in acute coronary syndromes. Conclusion: Systemic TF activity in AMI has an unfavorable prognostic value and as a marker for dysregulated coagulation may add to predict the atherothrombotic risk.

iPad Shortage Could Be Good News for Apple’s Rivals
Apple’s long-awaited iPad may be even more long-awaited as manufacturing glitches will limit the initial availability of the tablet computer, a Wall Street analyst has warned. Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek said in a note to investors that the problems will limit initial availability to 300,000 units and could even push the launch of the product, currently scheduled for this month, back to April. “The upcoming iPad launch may be somewhat limited as a manufacturing bottleneck has impacted production of Apple’s newest device,” Misek wrote. “An unspecified production problem at the iPad’s manufacturer, Hon Hai Precision, will likely limit the launch region to the U.S., and the number of units available to roughly 300K in the month of March, far lower than the company’s initial estimate of 1,000K units.” “The delay in production ramp will likely impact Apple’s April unit estimate of 800K as well,” he wrote. “It is also possible that, given the limited number of units available in March, the launch will be delayed for a month.” Delay Could Help Competitors That puts iPad sales through the end of June — the close of Apple’s third quarter — at just 550,000 iPads. Misek predicted sales of 1.2 million in fiscal 2010, which closes in September — once all the production problems are worked through. He is still looking for 3.5 million units in fiscal year 2011. At the end of the day, however, the delay shouldn’t be a big deal. “We believe that the only material impact from the iPad delay could come in the form of frustrated consumers and some modest loss of lustre for the company’s product launch,” Misek wrote. Unlike previous Apple products that have defined categories, the iPad is entering a crowded market for tablet devices.
